Somaya Moosajee
She is an emerging Muslim Artist from Melbourne, Australia, specialising in the technique of hand drawn mandalas and Zen-tangle designs based on South Asian colour palettes, combined with Islamic motifs and art history. Her primary mediums are pen and paper and she has been in this art practice for several years.
Mandala design is reputed for its proven psychological capacity to relax those who engage with and view the drawing style and is a known reducer of stress, which individuals have experienced increasingly in 2020.
Somaya has had several works commissioned privately and in response to the growing requests made of her, she is now providing Mandala design workshops for her new business ??andala Visions??(MV). She has successfully pivoted to providing an online hand drawing workshop series via skype or zoom, to bring people together, artists and non-artists, for the collaborative or individual purpose of lifting one another and accessing a unique therapeutic mechanism, whilst simultaneously creating beautiful work.
The need for an arts service catering to culturally diverse clients seeking to explore connections to heritage through the beauty of art and who do not feel necessarily represented by the existing arts community around them, is a niche Somaya is intent on responding to, particularly for Muslims in the West.
She has a background in International Studies and early childhood education and is a committed member of numerous Muslim-led organisations across Victoria. Through her work in the Muslim community sector, particularly within youth organisations and initiatives, Somaya has used her passion for leadership and art to inspire inclusivity and social change, which are her primary drives.
Within and beyond her artistic pursuits, Somaya strongly advocates for human rights and environmental protection and is deeply committed to engaging with business growth and opportunities via ethical pathways aligned to her faith principles.

13 April 2022 at 10:08 amSherene Hassan, Education Director at the Islamic Museum of Australia: I am familiar with Somaya’s skills as a Mandala artist which I consider to be of exceptional standard. As the Education Manager for the Islamic Museum of Australia (IMA) I can attest to both the value, calibre and demand for a skill set like hers. There are too few artisan’s in Victoria’s creative community who possess the talent she has.

13 April 2022 at 10:09 amPeter Gould, Director and Founder of Gould Studios: Somaya’s talent, inspired by her beliefs is seen in the intricate detail of her design, celebrating both her faith and heritage. Consequently, as a professional creative in this field I see value in the MV initiative to enhance social connections and cultural cohesion via a technique that fuses these diverse elements via a workshop format. Through her praxis, Somaya champions an ethos of mine, which states: “At the intersection of design, entrepreneurship & spirituality is a profound opportunity for transformation of ‘Heart-Centered Design’, aligning aspirations for meaningful worldly impact with deep, inner purpose.”
